Holztrompete or Tristan Trumpet
This is a holztrompete, otherwise known as a Tristan trumpet. It is made of wood and traditionally has a mouthpiece made out of horn.
Justin Emerich – Principal Trumpet Seattle Opera
Wagner called for this instrument to be used in Act Three of his great opera, Tristan und Isolde. He wanted it to emulate the sound of a crude wooden trumpet used as a signalling device by shepherds. It is pitched in C major, and is so rare that the part is normally performed on the cor anglais instead.
